A grandfather took his granddaughter for a hike up a mountain. It was hard work as there was no path and they had to scramble over rocks and make their way through the trees. When they reached the summit the young girl was awestruck by the majestic view. She was then surprised to see that many people were already there as they had driven up the road on the other side.
“Grampa, it would have been a lot easier if we had just driven. These people get the same view, without all the work. Why did we take the hard way?” she asked.
“The view is sweeter when it has to be earned,” the grandfather replied.
“I guess it would have felt a little more special if the others hadn’t gotten here so easily,” she admitted.
“Comparison is the thief of joy. Conquering your mountain should never be diminished by what anyone else does. I’m proud of you for climbing this mountain… what others do has no bearing on what you accomplished,” the grandfather explained.
